Master of Research in New Zealand

A thesis is not a longercoursework degree.

A research master's is a Level 9 qualification built around sustained, supervised investigation — and the size of its research component decides more than your workload. It sets whether you can work unlimited hours on your student visa, and how ready a university considers you for a PhD. This guide maps the four routes in, what each provider actually requires, and where the 90-credit line falls.

The qualification

What a research master's actually is

A research master's is a Level 9 postgraduate qualification for students who want to investigate a specialised problem, build advanced research capability, and prepare for research-intensive work or doctoral study. New Zealand master's degrees can be completed through taught courses, through research, or through a combination of both.

NZQA states that a master's degree normally carries at least 120 credits at Level 8 and above, with at least 40 credits at Level 9. A master's predominantly by research includes a thesis or creative work worth at least 90 credits.

90

Research credits

The threshold that matters twice. NZQA uses it to define a master's predominantly by research. Immigration New Zealand uses it to decide whether a master's counts as a “Masters by Research” for unlimited student work rights — at least 90 credits of thesis, dissertation, substantial research paper or scholarly creative work.

A master's with fewer research credits is still a valid Level 9 master's. It is simply not a Masters by Research for those purposes.

The title alone is not enough

Research-focused qualifications in New Zealand appear under several names. What decides the treatment is the credit structure, not the words on the certificate.

  • Master of Science (Research)
  • Master of Science (Thesis)
  • Master of Arts (Thesis)
  • Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
  • Master of Management by Thesis
  • Master of Business Informatics by Thesis
  • Master of Applied Science
  • Another discipline-specific master's with a substantial thesis, dissertation or scholarly research component

Where it fits

Four routes between a Bachelor's and a PhD

Which one is right depends mainly on your previous qualification, your academic standard and how much genuine research preparation you already have — not on which is fastest.

  1. Bachelor's degree → structured research master's → PhD

Bachelor's degreeResearch methods & advanced coursework90- or 120-credit thesisPossible PhD application

A Bachelor's graduate does not always need a separate Postgraduate Diploma before starting research-oriented study. NZQA allows 180-credit master's degrees to admit Bachelor graduates who meet the provider's required academic standard, and 240-credit master's degrees commonly provide a longer route that builds substantial research preparation before the thesis.

    Current examples

    • Toi Ohomai's Master of Applied Science — an appropriate Bachelor's with a B− average, including a 120-credit thesis
    • ICL's Master of Business Informatics by Thesis — a relevant Bachelor's or Graduate Diploma, with a 30-credit research proposal before the 90-credit thesis
    • Lincoln University's 240-credit Master of Science (Research) — a relevant Level 7 Bachelor's with a B average
    • University of Otago's 240-point Master of Science (Thesis) — a relevant BSc with at least a B average
  2. Bachelor Honours or PGDip → thesis-only master's → PhD

Bachelor Honours or PGDip120-credit thesis-focused master'sPossible PhD application

Students who already hold a Level 8 qualification with suitable research preparation may be eligible for a shorter 120-credit master's, usually built around a major thesis. NZQA's normal entry model for a 120-credit master's is Bachelor Honours, a Postgraduate Diploma, or in some cases an undergraduate degree followed by relevant professional experience.

    Current examples

    • Toi Ohomai's 120-credit Master of Management by Thesis — Bachelor Honours or a relevant Postgraduate Diploma
    • ICL's Master of Management by Thesis — built on an NZQCF Level 8 qualification, including a 90-credit thesis
    • Lincoln University's 120-credit thesis-only research master's routes
    • University of Otago's thesis-only MSc route for suitable BSc(Hons) or PGDipSci graduates
  3. Coursework master's with significant research → direct PhD application

Master's with a substantial dissertation or thesisStrong academic performancePossible direct PhD application

A second master's should never be recommended automatically. NZQA notes that a master's containing at least 40 credits of supervised research at Level 9 may provide a basis for consideration for doctoral study — but universities apply their own, higher standards.

The University of Waikato requires a qualifying Honours or master's with a research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of study; Massey normally requires a completed research project, dissertation or thesis of at least 30 credits or at least 25% of the qualifying degree; and the University of Auckland requires evidence of significant research such as a dissertation or thesis alongside the required academic standard.

  4. Completed research master's → PhD

    Completed research master'sPhD applicationDoctoral study

A completed research master's is one of the clearest conventional routes into doctoral study, because it evidences sustained independent research, supervision, academic writing and a substantial thesis.

It does not create automatic admission. Universities still assess grades, the quality and relevance of your previous research, your proposed topic, supervisor availability, English requirements and the research resources available.

How providers structure it

Research-focused master's programmes in New Zealand

    Research structure
A 120-point thesis. Applicants submit a brief research outline, then a formal research proposal later.
    Why it matters
A research-only MPhil with an experience-based route for some Bachelor graduates.

Where the proposal is developed during the course

Particularly relevant if you are interested in research but have no publications and no finished thesis proposal. Some programmes build proposal development into the curriculum rather than requiring it up front.

  • ICL — Master of Business Informatics by Thesis

A prior publication or completed research proposal is not listed as a standard entry requirement. The programme includes Research Methods and a dedicated 30-credit Research Proposal paper before the 90-credit thesis.

  • Toi Ohomai — Master of Applied Science

Applicants submit a 500–1,000 word statement of purpose, not a full thesis proposal. Applied Research Methods is designed so students complete the formal proposal before entering the major research stage.

  • Toi Ohomai — Master of Management (coursework & thesis)

Bachelor graduates can enter the 240-credit route, which includes Research Methodology before the 90-credit thesis.

  • IPU — Master of Global Business

Bachelor graduates meeting the published grade and English requirements enter a programme containing Postgraduate Research Methods and a later research component of either 60 or 90 credits.

“No full proposal at application” does not mean “no research requirements”. A provider may still require a statement of purpose, a personal statement, academic evidence, a relevant discipline background, work experience, or later approval of the thesis topic.

Time & work

How long it takes, and what you actually do

New Zealand master's degrees are commonly 120, 180 or 240 credits. Duration depends on how much postgraduate preparation you already have and how much coursework comes before the thesis.

  • 120 credits

    About 1 year full time

Thesis-focused, for students who already hold suitable Level 8 preparation.

  • 180 credits

    About 1.5 years full time

A structured route from a Bachelor's degree into research.

  • 240 credits

    About 2 years full time

Advanced coursework combined with substantial research or a thesis.

Source: Current examples include ICL's 12-month Master of Management by Thesis, Toi Ohomai's 1.5-year Master of Applied Science, Lincoln's two-year 240-credit Master of Science (Research), and thesis-only one-year routes for suitably prepared applicants at Lincoln and Otago.

The research lifecycle

Requirements differ by field, but a research master's normally runs through the same ten stages.

  1. Refine a research problem, question or hypothesis
  2. Complete an advanced literature review and identify the research gap
  3. Undertake research-methods training where required
  4. Develop and obtain approval for the research proposal
  5. Complete ethics, cultural, laboratory, safety, data-access or fieldwork approvals where required
  6. Conduct experiments, interviews, surveys, modelling, archival research, fieldwork or other discipline-appropriate investigation
  7. Analyse and interpret evidence or data
  8. Meet regularly with supervisors and complete progress milestones
  9. Present work in seminars or conferences where appropriate
  10. Write and submit a substantial thesis, dissertation or approved scholarly output

Source: At the University of Auckland, general guidance links the size of a research component to its academic weight — a 90-point component is generally associated with a substantially larger written work than a 30- or 60-point project. Word length and output requirements stay discipline-specific.

Who should consider a research master's

  • You hold a Bachelor's degree and want a structured transition into serious research before a PhD
  • You already hold Honours or a Postgraduate Diploma and want to complete a major thesis
  • You have a coursework master's but limited evidence of independent research
  • You want to build research methodology, academic writing, data analysis and project-management skills
  • You want to investigate a specialised problem in depth
  • You are considering an academic, research, policy, laboratory, technical, consulting or R&D career
  • You want stronger research evidence for a future PhD or scholarship application
  • You have professional experience that can be converted into a defensible applied-research project

When it is the wrong choice

It is less suitable where your primary objective is professional conversion, registration in a regulated occupation, or the fastest possible taught qualification. Research fit and long-term purpose should drive the choice, not the level number.

Getting in

Entry, proposal, supervisor and the application

There is no single admission rule for every New Zealand research master's. NZQA sets the national framework; each provider sets its own programme-specific standards.

What entry is assessed on

  • The level and relevance of your previous qualification
  • Grades in the Bachelor's, Honours, Postgraduate Diploma or master's
  • Any previous dissertation, thesis or research project
  • Research-methods preparation
  • Professional or industry experience, where accepted
  • Your proposed research area, and whether supervision is available
  • A statement of purpose, personal statement or research outline where required
  • English-language proficiency
  • Whether an overseas qualification is considered equivalent to the New Zealand entry standard

NZQA notes that a 120-credit master's normally requires Honours, a Postgraduate Diploma, or an undergraduate degree plus relevant professional experience; a 180-credit master's normally admits a Bachelor's graduate meeting a specified academic standard; and a 240-credit master's can provide a longer postgraduate route from a Bachelor's.

What a strong proposal covers

A proposal is common in thesis-based study, but it is not universally required as a finished document at first application.

  • Working title and research topic
  • Background and key literature
  • Research problem or gap
  • Aim, objectives and research questions
  • Proposed methodology and data or evidence
  • Ethical or cultural considerations where relevant
  • Resources, facilities or field access
  • Significance and likely contribution
  • Feasibility and an indicative timeline
  • Alignment with the intended supervisor or research group

The University of Canterbury advises that an initial proposal need not be fully developed, but should outline the topic, its links to key theories and a potential methodology so a supervisor can assess fit. AUT's MPhil process likewise starts with a brief research outline.

Finding a supervisor

Supervisor fit matters more to a research project than university ranking does. Before making contact, review the academic's current research interests, recent publications, active projects, methods, facilities, research group and availability. A first message should explain your previous qualification, research experience, proposed topic, why their work matches it, your intended start period and any scholarship plans.

Follow the institution's own process: some universities expect supervisor contact before a formal application, while structured providers may admit students first and allocate or confirm supervision later.

The application, step by step

  1. Identify the broad research field and your long-term goal
  2. Assess your existing research preparation — Bachelor's only, Honours, PGDip, coursework master's, thesis or professional research experience
  3. Choose the right structure: 120-credit thesis-only, 180-credit structured, or 240-credit coursework-and-thesis
  4. Check the exact academic and English entry requirements for that specific programme
  5. Identify a supervisor or research area where the institution requires this before application
  6. Prepare the research outline, statement of purpose, personal statement or full proposal, as applicable
  7. Prepare transcripts, degree certificates, CV, English evidence, references and prior research evidence
  8. Submit the formal application with any programme-specific supporting material
  9. Apply separately for scholarships where required — some are automatic or nomination-based, others are not
  10. Complete any interview, supervisor confirmation or research approval
  11. Accept the offer and satisfy any conditions
  12. Complete the student visa process, with the required tuition, living-fund and insurance evidence

This is generic process guidance. Structured providers such as ICL or IPU may not use the supervisor-first model that university thesis programmes do — follow the current instructions of the provider you are applying to.

English language requirements

There is no single English score that applies to every New Zealand research master's. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or an accepted equivalent, is a common published standard for Level 9 programmes — Toi Ohomai's Level 9 Master of Management and Master of Applied Science, ICL's thesis master's programmes, IPU's Master of Global Business and the University of Auckland's standard PhD benchmark all currently use it, subject to programme-specific variations.

Funding

Scholarships, fees and living costs

  • Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships

Nepal is currently listed as an eligible Asian country for postgraduate study. Highly competitive, with country-specific eligibility and recommended fields linked to Nepal's development priorities. Application rounds open and close separately each year.

  • University of Otago International Master's Research Scholarship

For international students undertaking a thesis-based master's. Currently NZ$18,204 stipend per year plus a tuition-fee waiver for one year capped at NZ$35,000. Only a small number are offered.

  • University of Waikato Research Masters Scholarship

Currently up to NZ$15,000 for eligible students undertaking a 90- or 120-point thesis in their first master's. International students currently need at least 120 points of prior study at a New Zealand university.

  • University & faculty awards

Institutions may also offer subject-specific research awards, tuition discounts, project funding or general international scholarships. Eligibility is assessed separately from admission.

Admission and funding are separate decisions

Being academically eligible for a research master's does not make a scholarship likely. Selection for funding is competitive and assessed independently of your offer.

Fees and living costs

There is no single national tuition fee for an international research master's. Fees vary by provider, subject, laboratory or field requirements, thesis length, structure and year of enrolment — use the exact programme page and international fee schedule for your intake.

For student visa purposes, INZ currently requires self-funded tertiary students to show NZ$20,000 for each year of study (or NZ$1,667 per month for study shorter than a year), on top of tuition and outward-travel requirements. Actual living costs vary with city and accommodation.

While you study, and after

Student visa, work rights & PSWV

Work rights while studying

Most eligible tertiary students may work up to 25 hours a week while studying, and full time during eligible scheduled breaks, depending on their visa conditions.

Students undertaking a qualifying Masters by Research or doctoral degree may receive unlimited work rights. INZ's current clarification defines the qualifying master's as one containing at least 90 credits of thesis, dissertation, substantial research paper or scholarly creative work.

Partner and family

A student studying an eligible Level 9 or 10 qualification may be able to support a Partner of a Student Work Visa, subject to the partnership and visa requirements. This is a Level 9 benefit — it is not limited to research master's programmes.

Dependent-child settings differ. The broader domestic-schooling benefit described for international PhD students does not automatically apply to every master's student.

After graduation

A research master's has no separate Post Study Work Visa category. Under current settings an eligible Level 9 graduate who completes at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand may be eligible for a three-year PSWV, subject to all other requirements.

INZ has announced that from 16 November 2026, eligible Level 9 graduates continue to be eligible for the three-year PSWV after at least 30 weeks. Settings change — verify the rule current at your graduation.

Full post-study work rules

Check the exact programme structure. A Level 9 master's is not automatically a Masters by Research for unlimited work rights. IPU's Master of Global Business, for example, can contain either a 60-credit or a 90-credit research component — only the 90-credit options meet INZ's current threshold. You must also comply with the conditions printed on your own visa and keep meeting your study requirements.

What comes next

After completing a research master's

  • 01

    Apply for a PhD

A strong research master's evidences independent research ability, advanced methodology, academic writing, evidence analysis and completion of a substantial supervised project — exactly what universities assess in doctoral applicants.

  • 02

    Research & specialist employment

Research or evidence-intensive roles in universities, research institutes, government, technology, environmental organisations, engineering, food and agriculture, health, consulting, policy, data and analytics, or industry R&D. Options depend strongly on field, registration requirements and prior experience.

  • 03

Return home with advanced research capability

For students returning to Nepal, a research master's can matter in infrastructure and disaster resilience, agriculture and food systems, environmental management, public policy, health research, education, technology, development projects and the university or research sector. The qualification does not itself guarantee a job or a migration outcome.

Why New Zealand is also popular for PhD study

New Zealand has a distinctive policy environment for international doctoral students: they generally pay the same tuition fees as domestic PhD students, hold unlimited work rights while studying, and current family settings can allow a partner work visa and dependent children to study as domestic students in state schools, subject to INZ rules. That is what makes the research master's → PhD route worth planning deliberately, rather than drifting into.

Career planning

The Green List connection, used carefully

The Green List is a list of occupations, not courses. A research master's is not automatically a “Green List qualification”. You would still have to satisfy the exact occupation requirements — qualification level, subject focus, professional registration, experience and remuneration where applicable.

Source: The current Green List states that Environmental Research Scientist requires a relevant Level 8-or-higher qualification in specified environmental focus areas; Food Technologist has specified Level 7/8 pathways; engineering occupations often require recognised qualifications or Engineering New Zealand recognition; and several ICT occupations carry remuneration thresholds. Check the current Appendix 13 wording for the exact occupation.

From Nepal

What Nepalese applicants should prepare

New Zealand providers assess overseas qualifications individually. Do not convert a Nepal GPA or percentage into a New Zealand B, B+ or Honours classification yourself — the provider determines equivalence, and may weigh the institution, the degree length, subject relevance, grades and research preparation.

Prepare complete academic transcripts, degree certificates, course outlines where useful, evidence of previous dissertations or projects, a CV, research or professional experience, English evidence, references, and the programme-specific statement of purpose or proposal where required.

Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships currently list Nepal among eligible Asian countries for postgraduate study, publish recommended development-related subject areas for Nepal, and require relevant work experience from postgraduate applicants. Rounds are competitive and change each year.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every Level 9 master's is a research master's for unlimited student work rights
  • Assuming a 60-credit dissertation is equivalent to a 90- or 120-credit thesis for immigration or PhD preparation
  • Assuming every Bachelor's graduate can enter a 120-credit thesis-only master's
  • Assuming a high GPA replaces evidence of research readiness
  • Believing prior publications are compulsory for every research master's application
  • Sending a generic research proposal without checking the supervisor or programme requirements
  • Assuming supervisor interest guarantees admission
  • Assuming admission means scholarship funding
  • Choosing a university by overall ranking rather than supervisor and research fit
  • Describing a course as “Green List approved” when the Green List applies to occupations, not courses
  • Assuming a research qualification guarantees employment, residence or professional registration

Can I apply after a coursework master's?

Yes. A coursework master's graduate can apply for a research master's or — if the previous qualification already contains enough significant independent research — may be able to apply directly for a PhD. The question is not “do I have a master's” but “how much genuine research did it contain, and does that meet the target university's doctoral-entry standard”.

A master's without a thesis does not block future PhD study, but it makes research readiness harder to evidence. The usual routes from there are a research master's, a thesis year, a Postgraduate Diploma or Honours route, or another structured research-preparation programme, depending on the institution.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Applicants with a strong Bachelor Honours or master's containing sufficient significant research may be eligible to apply directly for a PhD. The target university's doctoral-entry standard decides this, not the qualification name.

Yes, in selected programmes — Toi Ohomai's Master of Applied Science, ICL's Master of Business Informatics by Thesis, Lincoln's 240-credit Master of Science (Research) and Otago's longer MSc (Thesis) route are current examples. Entry grades and discipline requirements still apply.

Not usually. There is no universal New Zealand rule requiring a publication for research master's admission. Publications strengthen an application, but many structured programmes do not list them as an entry requirement.

Not always. Some programmes require a proposal or research outline before admission, others ask for a statement of purpose, and structured programmes may teach proposal development after enrolment.

Both can sit inside a Level 9 master's, but Immigration New Zealand currently requires at least 90 credits of qualifying research for the master's to be treated as a Masters by Research for unlimited student work rights. Universities also tend to view a larger research component as stronger PhD preparation.

Only if your visa conditions allow it. Current INZ policy can grant unlimited work rights to students undertaking a qualifying Masters by Research or doctoral degree; for a master's, the current interpretation requires at least 90 credits of qualifying research.

Under current settings, an eligible Level 9 master's graduate who completes at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand may receive a three-year Post Study Work Visa, subject to meeting all other requirements.

A student studying an eligible Level 9 qualification can currently support a Partner of a Student Work Visa, subject to Immigration New Zealand's partnership and visa requirements.

Yes — it provides stronger evidence of thesis quality, research capability, methodology and supervisor references. Scholarship competition still remains separate from academic admission.
