2027 Guide · International Students
Study in Darwin,Northern Territory.
Some students want the biggest city. Others want to be somewhere their effort truly stands out — and Darwin rewards exactly that kind of student.
A smaller, tropical study destination with the strongest regional classification — Category 3 — a multicultural community and employment linked to health, education, construction, defence, resources, tourism and government. The trade-offs are a smaller labour market, fewer higher-education choices and higher costs for some goods and accommodation.

Why students choose it
Why international students choose Darwin
A recognised university with Northern Australia expertise
There is real value in specialising where the world needs it most.
Charles Darwin University is ranked 551 in QS World University Rankings 2027, offering higher education, TAFE and research across nursing, health, engineering, IT, business, education, environmental science, social work and public health — at Casuarina and Danala in the CBD, with facilities at Palmerston and the Waterfront.
One of Australia's strongest regional-study locations
If your goal is more time and options after graduation, few places give you as much room.
Every NT postcode is Category 3. For eligible graduates, Category 3 study and residence can provide up to two additional years through the second Post-Higher Education Work stream — a conditional benefit, not a guaranteed skilled visa or PR outcome.
Exposure to distinctive Northern Territory industries
Darwin puts you close to industries most students never get to touch.
Darwin is the NT's administrative, defence and commercial hub, with large employment in health care, public administration, education, construction, retail and hospitality — and wider links to LNG, mining, energy, defence, logistics and tourism.
Free public buses cut day-to-day costs
Every dollar you don't spend on the bus stays in your budget.
Public buses across Greater Darwin, Casuarina, Palmerston and the rural area are currently free — a practical saving if you live near a route to CDU or another provider. There is no metropolitan rail, so campus and suburb choice still matters.
A visible and established Nepali community
You will find people who understand exactly what you left behind.
The 2021 Census recorded 2,540 Nepal-born residents in Greater Darwin. The Nepalese Association of Northern Territory (NANT), running since 2007, organises cultural, social, sporting and welfare activities with 200+ volunteers, and Study NT's 2026 Student Ambassadors include students from Nepal.
Two focused higher-education options
Fewer choices, each with a clear purpose.
This guide features Charles Darwin University (CDU), with a broad portfolio across health, engineering, IT, business, education and environmental science, and Canterbury Institute of Management (CIM), with business and IT-focused programs from its Darwin CBD campus.

Regional study advantage
Category 3 — the strongest regional classification
Darwin and the entire Northern Territory are Category 3 regional areas — a stronger classification than Category 2 cities. Weigh it alongside course quality, accreditation, career fit and realistic employment opportunities.
Potential second 485 benefit
What eligible graduates generally need
- 1Studied the relevant degree at a CRICOS degree-level provider on an eligible Category 3 regional campus.
- 2Met the required regional residence conditions while on the first Temporary Graduate visa.
- 3Met the separate age, visa, health insurance and other second-485 requirements.
Category 3 · Darwin
Darwin, Alice Springs and every other Northern Territory postcode
+2 years
Potentially, on a Second Post-Higher Education Work visa for eligible graduates.
Category 2
For comparison — Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Canberra, Geelong, Hobart
+1 year
Generally, for eligible graduates of Category 2 cities.
5 regional-study points
Applicants who satisfy all regional-study points-test criteria may be eligible for 5 points for study in a designated regional area.
No need to leave Darwin
Darwin itself is Category 3 — the same as the rest of the NT. There is no stronger benefit from studying elsewhere in the Territory.
No automatic visa, nomination or PR
Studying in Darwin does not automatically provide an extra visa, skilled nomination or permanent residency. Migration settings can change, and individual eligibility must be checked at the time of application.

Budgeting for Darwin
Student accommodation and rental costs
Darwin is not always a low-cost rental market, so shared accommodation is the realistic option for most students. Listings reviewed on 9 September 2026 show private rooms from about A$250 in Nakara, Malak, Rapid Creek and Gray, and many around A$300–350 in Parap, Nightcliff and Stuart Park.
Budget private room / share house

per week · suburban share houses
Rooms around A$250–300 in Casuarina-area and suburban share houses; some include electricity, water and internet.
- Planning range
Typical private room
A$300–350
per week · Parap, Nightcliff, Stuart Park
A common planning range across Parap, Nightcliff, Stuart Park, Moil and similar areas, depending on bills and room quality.
Darwin CBD / premium room or studio
A$360–465+
per week · central or furnished
Often more expensive, but may include utilities and be closer to Danala or city-based providers.
Budget tip: air-conditioning can be a real cost in Darwin's tropical climate. Ask whether electricity, water and internet are included before comparing rooms — and free buses only save money if your room is near a useful route.

Getting around
Getting around Darwin
Darwin has no metropolitan train network — students mainly use buses, cars, cycling and walking. The NT Government currently runs free public buses across Greater Darwin.
Match your suburb to your campus. Darwin is more spread out than many university cities. CDU students may study at Casuarina, Danala in the CBD, Palmerston or elsewhere, depending on the course.
Think about the wet season. A room with slightly lower rent may not be good value if it creates a difficult commute in the hot, humid wet season.

Earning while you learn
Working while studying in Darwin
Part-time work includes hospitality, retail, customer service, care and support services, administration and tourism, and some courses include placements or work-integrated learning. Darwin is Australia's smallest capital by population — plan on a different scale from Sydney or Melbourne.
48 hrs
per fortnight while your course is in session
Most Student visa (subclass 500) holders, with unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks. Different rules apply to some students, including postgraduate research — check your conditions in VEVO.
One uni
less competition for campus roles
CDU is the NT's only public university, so competition for on-campus jobs and internships is far lower than in a multi-university city.
Dry season
peak hiring, roughly May–October
Hospitality, tourism, retail and events peak in the dry season. Part-time work is never guaranteed income or the main source of funds for tuition and living costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Darwin can be cheaper in some areas but is not automatically cheap. Shared-room listings commonly sit around A$250–350 per week, while CBD or premium studios can be A$360–465 or more. Free public buses are a major saving, but electricity for air-conditioning, food and other remote-location costs can be higher than students expect.
Start with CDU StudyStays, CDU Village Casuarina, UniLodge Darwin, Flatmates.com.au and established real-estate websites. Study NT recommends checking total cost, bond, utilities, distance to campus and transport before signing.
- Inspect the property in person, or use a detailed live video inspection if you are overseas.
- Confirm rent, bond, electricity, water, internet, lease length and move-in date in writing.
- Verify the landlord, agent or accommodation provider before transferring money.
- If possible, arrange short-term accommodation first so you can compare suburbs after arrival.
No. Darwin itself is Category 3, the same as all other Northern Territory postcodes. Eligible graduates who complete the relevant degree at a qualifying Darwin campus and meet the residence and other second-485 requirements may qualify for the two-year Category 3 benefit.
Choose your course and campus mainly for academic fit, accreditation, career goals and budget. If migration is important to your decision, get individual advice from a registered migration agent or Australian legal practitioner.
